As a curiosity we tell you that George Lucas came up with R2-D2 during the filming of American Graffitti, when he told someone of sound that he wanted reel 2 of the second dialogue that, in production language, is abbreviated to R2-D2. Lucas thought it was funny as it sounded, and he gave the name to the robot. In the first drafts of the script, R2-D2 could speak English, and it had some rather bad lines, but to make it more fun, they replaced their dialogue with sounds, but left the reactions of C-3PO.
